English bibles, from Tyndale's 1525 New Testament to the 1611 King James, feature calendars, woodcuts, maps, chronologies, prayers, philological glosses, inset historical essays, elaborate multi-page diagrams, single-leaf summaries of scripture, prefaces by eminent churchmen, doctrinal notes by leading theologians, a dialogue on predestination, a twelfth-century genealogy of Christ, a ninth-century Jewish chronicle--most widely available, given the hundreds ofeditions printed between those dates. This book explores this archive, but it also tracks its changes, because while biblical translations remain relatively stable over time, the paratexts cocooning a bible's first printing sometimes mutate or vanish in succeeding editions--and indeed sometimes theymigrate to a competing bible. These paratexts, together with their revelatory print histories, disclose a picture of the English Reformation that differs in striking ways from the authorized version.

Following Genette’s understanding of paratext, this volume explores the question of how to deal editorially with those elements that are connected to the text or work to be edited but do not constitute its actual text type. This includes, for example, epilogues, advertising texts, typography, but also letters, diaries, notes, or material components of the work as a medial form of appearance. In Anknüpfung an Genettes Paratext-Verständnis (als ‚Beiwerk‘ zum Buch) geht der Band an literarischen, philosophischen und musikalischen Beispielen der Frage nach, wie editorisch mit jenen Elementen umzugehen ist, die mit dem zu edierenden Text bzw. Werk materiell verbunden sind, aber nicht seine eigentlichen Textsorten (‚Peritexte‘) bilden. Dies betrifft etwa Nachworte zu Auflagen, Werbetexte im Buch, überhaupt alle materiellen Bestandteile des Werkes als medialer Erscheinungsform (Umschlag eines Buches, Bindungen einer Handschrift, Formate, Papiere etc.), nicht zuletzt aber auch die Formen, durch die die Schriftzeichen repräsentiert werden (Layout von Handschriften- und Buchseiten, Typografie, Grafie, Farbgestaltung etc.). Sollen überhaupt – und wenn ja, wie – peritextuelle Elemente des Werkes editorisch dargestellt werden? Auch auf der Ebene der ‚Epitexte‘, also jener nicht mit dem Text/Werk verbundenen Materialien wie Tagebuch- und Notizbucheinträge, Briefäußerungen oder anderer Egomaterialien sowie sonstiger Verlautbarungen zum Werk (autoreigen oder fremd), geht der Band dieser Abgrenzungsfrage nach.

Ce volume "Jeunes chercheurs" est consacré aux spécificités du monde éditorial des aires anglophones et francophones aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles. Il se situe à la croisée des intérêts actuels, et stimulants, de la recherche en littérature, en histoire, histoire du livre, de l'édition et de l'art, mais aussi histoire des idées et des mentalités. Ces spécificités y sont abordées par le biais, original, de l'habillage du texte et du livre : paratextes lisibles et visibles, traduction, ornementation et reliure, tout un ensemble de stratégies de transformation et d'adaptation des textes et des livres à des horizons de réception différents dans le temps et l'espace.

This Element Paratext printed with new English plays has a lot to tell us about what playwrights were attempting to do and how audiences responded, thereby contributing substantially to our understanding of larger patterns of generic evolution across two centuries. The presence (or absence) of twelve elements needs to be systematically surveyed. (1) Attribution of authorship; (2) generic designation; (3) performance auspices; (4) government license authorizing publication; (5) dedication; (6) prefaces of various sorts; (7a-b-c) list of characters (three types); (8) actors' names (sometimes with descriptive characterizations-very helpful for deducing intended authorial interpretation); (9) location of action; (10) prologue and epilogue for first production. Surveying these results, we can see that much of the generic evolution traceable in the later seventeenth century gets undone during the eighteenth-a reversal largely attributable to the Licensing Act of 1737.
